“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.”
—Teilhard de Chardin
Dr. Walt Rutherford is the Director of Our Common Home Counseling Center and is recognized as a pioneer in the research and treatment of trauma therapies. He served as the director of one of the first VA Vet Centers in the nation, where he began his groundbreaking study of the phenomenon later identified as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Walt has also studied and taught Buddhist philosophy and psychology and holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.
He is widely respected for his expertise in couples and relationship counseling. After forty years of solo practice as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Walt is excited to co-create a dynamic center with his wife, Bonnie—one that models the very principles of loving relationship that they seek to nurture in the world.
The human family is undergoing a spiritual and ecological awakening. Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you are welcome here. Honoring intimacy in all our relationships—and with the natural world—we invite the integration of art, psychology, ecology, and the ancient wisdom traditions.
Rev. Bonnie Tarwater has served as a parish minister for over twenty years. She is a pastoral counselor, spiritual director, dream worker, artist, musician, and writer, and serves as the minister of Church for Our Common Home.
Her life experience—living and traveling in many countries, her dedication as a social justice activist, and her role as wife, mother, and grandmother—shapes her global perspective. Deeply concerned with the epidemic of loneliness in the modern world, Bonnie is devoted to nurturing loving relationships as the deepest of all psychospiritual practices. She supports her clients in discovering meaning, life purpose, and community.
Bonnie has served as both a hospital and hospice chaplain and currently serves on several nonprofit boards of directors.
